The Innovator Founder Visa is designed for entrepreneurs with a genuinely original business idea — one that is innovative, viable, and scalable, and which you have either developed yourself or contributed to significantly.
Getting Started
Before applying, you’ll need an endorsement from a Home Office-approved endorsing body, who will assess whether your proposal has real commercial potential. You’ll also need to demonstrate English proficiency, hold the required funds, and be prepared to take an active role in the day-to-day management of your business.
Visa Duration and Extensions
The visa is initially granted for three years, after which it can be extended in further three-year periods with no upper limit on the number of extensions. Each extension requires a new endorsement confirming that your business continues to meet the eligibility criteria — a process that also serves as a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the progress your venture has made since your last application.
The Path to Settlement
After three years of continuous residence in the UK on this visa, you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). To qualify, you will need a further endorsement confirming your business has met the required growth and innovation benchmarks, a pass on the Life in the UK Test (for applicants aged 18 to 64), and no more than 180 days spent outside the UK in any 12-month period across your three years of residence.
Can I bring my family members (dependants)?
Yes. Your partner and children can apply to join or stay with you in the UK and may later apply for ILR.
Can I work outside my business?
Yes, but only in skilled roles (RQF Level 3 or above), and you must continue to play a key role in managing and developing your endorsed business.
What are the visa fees and processing times?
- Application fee: £1,274 (outside the UK), £1,590 (inside the UK).
- Endorsement fee: £1,000 (initial), plus £500 per required check-in with the endorsing body.
- Healthcare surcharge: Payable as part of your application.
- Processing time: 3 weeks (outside the UK), 8 weeks (inside the UK).
Can I apply for an extension from outside the UK?
Yes, provided your endorsement remains valid and your business continues to meet the eligibility criteria.
