Naturalisation comes with a range of rights and responsibilities — from the right to a British passport to the ability to vote in all UK elections. Applicants must demonstrate lawful residence, good character, and sufficient knowledge of English and life in the UK. Approval is at the discretion of the Home Secretary, and meeting the requirements does not guarantee citizenship.
Getting Started
Naturalisation is the process by which you can apply to become a British citizen after living in the UK for a qualifying period. In most cases, you’ll need to have lived in the UK for at least five years, though this drops to three years if you’re married to a British citizen. You’ll also need to hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or EU Settled Status — and in most cases, you’ll need to have held that status for at least 12 months before applying. If you’re married to a British citizen, the 12-month wait is waived, though ILR is still required. At the point of application, you must be free from any immigration time restrictions.
Meeting the Requirements
Beyond the residence requirements, there are a few other boxes to tick. You’ll need to pass the Life in the UK Test and demonstrate English language proficiency, unless you’re exempt. You’ll also need to show you’ve been present in the UK for enough of the qualifying period — no more than 450 days outside the UK in the last five years (or 270 days in the last three years if married to a British citizen), and no more than 90 days outside the UK in the 12 months immediately before you apply. Finally, you’ll need to meet the good character requirement, which means no serious or recent criminal convictions, immigration breaches, or other issues that could affect your application.
The Application Process
When you’re ready to apply, you’ll submit your application online through the Home Office. After that, you’ll need to attend a UKVCAS appointment to provide your biometric information — fingerprints and a photograph. Decisions can take several months, so it’s worth applying in good time. One important thing to bear in mind: if your immigration status changes at any point during the process, you must notify the Home Office straight away.
Can I apply if I am married to a British citizen?
Yes. You may apply after 3 years of residence in the UK, provided you hold ILR or Settled Status and meet all other requirements.
What is the Life in the UK Test?
It is a computer-based test assessing your knowledge of British history, culture, and values. It is mandatory unless you are exempt.
Do I need to provide biometric information?
Yes. You must attend a UKVCAS appointment to submit your fingerprints and photograph.
Can I travel while my application is being processed?
Yes, but you must have been physically present in the UK on the exact date 5 (or 3) years before your application is received.
