Getting Started
For a Skilled Worker Visa application to succeed, both sides need to have the right things in place. Employers must hold a valid sponsor licence from the Home Office — without this, they cannot make a job offer that supports a visa. They’ll also need to confirm that the role meets the required skill level and salary thresholds, and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship to the applicant.
On the individual’s side, a confirmed job offer from a licensed sponsor is the essential starting point. Beyond that, applicants need to demonstrate English language ability and show they have enough funds to support themselves.
Once it is Granted
The visa is valid for up to five years and can be extended. For employers, ongoing sponsorship obligations continue throughout this period — including keeping records up to date and reporting any changes to the Home Office.
If an employee moves to a different employer or into a significantly different role, a new visa application is required, and the individual cannot begin the new position until it is approved.
The Path to Settlement
After five continuous years on a Skilled Worker Visa, individuals can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — effectively permanent residency.
Do I need a job offer to apply?
Yes. A confirmed job offer from a licensed UK sponsor is mandatory.
Can I bring family members?
Yes. Your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply as dependants. Each family member must submit a separate application. Once granted, dependants are free to work and study in the UK, and their visa will generally expire on the same date as yours.
Can I switch to this visa from within the UK?
Yes. You may switch from other eligible visa categories if you meet the requirements. If you are already in the UK on an eligible visa category — such as a Student visa, Graduate visa, or another work route — you may be able to switch to the Skilled Worker route without leaving the country, provided you meet all of the eligibility requirements and have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship in place. There are, however, certain visa categories from which switching is not permitted, and the rules in this area can be nuanced.
What jobs qualify for the Skilled Worker Visa?
To be eligible, your role must appear on the list of approved Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes recognised under the Skilled Worker route and must meet the minimum skill level of RQF Level 3 or above — broadly equivalent to A-level standard. Your salary must meet both the general threshold and the going rate for your specific occupation code. Certain shortage occupations and roles in sectors such as health and education may attract different salary thresholds. The eligible occupation list and salary requirements are frequently updated by the Home Office.
What is a Certificate of Sponsorship?
Your employer must assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship — a unique reference number confirming the details of your role — before you can submit your visa application. Without this, your application cannot proceed. If your prospective employer does not yet hold a Sponsor Licence, they will need to apply for one before the process can begin, which makes early planning on both sides essential.
