Keeping families together

The Child Dependent Visa allows the children of those living in the UK on a qualifying visa to join or remain with their parent/parents. Whether your child is joining you from abroad or you're looking to formalise their status while already in the UK, this visa provides the legal basis for them to live, and in most cases study, alongside you. Eligible parents include those on visas such as Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or those with protection status.

Getting Started

To be eligible, the child must be under 18 at the time of application, unmarried, and either the biological, adopted, or stepchild of the sponsoring parent. You’ll need to provide evidence of the relationship — such as a birth or adoption certificate — and demonstrate that the child will be financially supported without recourse to public funds. The child must either already be living with you in the UK or intending to join you here, and depending on their age and circumstances, an English language requirement may also apply.

Visa Duration and Extensions

The Child Dependent Visa is granted for the same duration as the sponsoring parent’s visa, keeping the family’s immigration status aligned. If you extend your own visa, your child’s can be extended at the same time, provided they continue to meet the eligibility criteria. It’s worth keeping track of both expiry dates together to make sure nothing is missed.

The Path to Settlement

After completing a qualifying period of continuous residence in the UK, children may become eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. The length of the qualifying period will depend on the parent’s visa type and immigration status, so the timeline to settlement will vary from family to family. If you’re thinking ahead to ILR for your child, it’s worth seeking advice early to understand what will be required and when.

Can a child apply if the parent is on a Student Visa?

  • Full UK birth certificate or adoption certificate.
  • Proof of the parent’s immigration status.
  • Evidence of the parent’s financial ability to support the child.
  • Documentation proving the relationship between parent and child.

Can a child apply from within the UK?

Yes. A child may apply from within the UK if they meet the eligibility criteria and the parent has valid leave to remain.

What is the processing time for this visa?

Processing times vary. Applications made from outside the UK typically take up to 12 weeks, while those made from within the UK may take up to 8 weeks.
