Just passing through? Here's what you need to do

The Transit Visa is intended for short-term stays of less than 48 hours. It does not permit work, study, or settlement in the UK. Whether you need a transit visa at all will depend on your nationality, so it's worth checking the requirements carefully before you book.

Getting Started

To be eligible, you must be travelling through the UK en route to another country, with a confirmed onward flight departing within 48 hours of your arrival. You’ll need to have assured entry to your final destination — for example, a valid visa or residence permit — and demonstrate a clear intention to leave the UK within the 48-hour window. There are two types of transit visa to be aware of: the Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV), for those who will remain within the airport without passing through border control; and the Visitor in Transit Visa, for those who need to pass through UK border control — for example, when changing airports or terminals.

What the Visa Covers

The Transit Visa is strictly limited in scope. You cannot work, study, access public funds, or receive medical treatment during your time in the UK, and you must not stay beyond the 48-hour limit under any circumstances. The visa cannot be extended or switched to another route while you are in the UK — if you find you need to stay longer than 48 hours, you will need to have applied for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.

Looking Ahead

The Transit Visa exists solely to facilitate onward travel and carries no pathway to settlement or longer-term stay in the UK. If your travel plans change and you decide you’d like to spend more time in the UK, the right course of action is to apply for the appropriate visa before you travel — not to extend or switch once you’re already here.

Do I need a transit visa?

It depends on your nationality and travel route. Some travellers are exempt, while others must apply in advance.

Can I leave the airport during transit?

Only if you hold a Visitor in Transit Visa and meet the relevant conditions.

What if I need to stay longer than 48 hours?

You must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.
