For those visiting the UK for tourism, business or family

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is the go-to route for anyone looking to visit the UK for a short, defined period — whether for leisure, business, or personal reasons. It covers a broad range of permitted activities, but comes with clear boundaries, so understanding what you can and can't do during your stay is essential before you travel.

Getting Started

The Standard Visitor Visa is for those coming to the UK for a temporary, time-limited purpose — whether that’s tourism, visiting family, attending business meetings, or undertaking a short course of study. To qualify, you’ll need to show that you have a genuine reason for your visit, that you can support yourself financially throughout your stay without accessing public funds, and crucially, that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit. You must also be able to cover the cost of your return or onward journey. The visa permits a wide range of activities — including volunteering for up to 30 days with a registered charity, receiving private medical treatment, and taking part in permitted paid engagements such as lectures or performances — but it does not allow you to work for a UK company, be self-employed, or access public funds.

Visa Duration and Extensions

Each visit on a Standard Visitor Visa is limited to six months, and extensions are only granted in limited circumstances, such as for ongoing medical treatment. For those who travel to the UK regularly, long-term visit visas valid for two, five, or ten years are available — though each individual visit must still not exceed six months. It’s also worth being aware that using repeated or successive visits as a way of living in the UK long-term is not permitted and could result in your visa being refused or cancelled.

Looking Ahead

The Standard Visitor Visa is strictly a short-stay route and does not lead to settlement in the UK. If your plans change and you decide you’d like to remain in the UK on a longer-term basis, you’ll need to apply for a different visa route that suits your circumstances — the visitor visa itself cannot be used as a stepping stone to residency.

Can I study in the UK on this visa?

Yes, for short courses lasting up to 6 months.

Can I apply for a long-term visit visa?

Yes. You may apply for a 2, 5, or 10-year multiple entry visa, but each visit must not exceed 6 months.
