The Minister of Religion Visa is designed for those who have been offered a key role within a faith community and are sponsored by a Home Office-licensed religious organisation.
Getting Started
To be eligible for a Minister of Religion Visa, you’ll need a job offer for a role within a UK faith community — specifically one involving leading a congregation, performing religious rites, or missionary work. You’ll also need a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed sponsor, proof of English language proficiency, and the ability to support yourself financially without relying on public funds.
Whilst in the UK
You’ll need to stick to the role described in your Certificate of Sponsorship, though there is some flexibility to take on a second job in certain circumstances, and study is permitted subject to conditions. You’re also able to bring your partner and children with you as dependants, as long as they meet the relevant requirements.
Extending Your Stay
The visa is valid for up to 3 years and 1 month (or the duration of your Certificate of Sponsorship plus 14 days, whichever is shorter). If you need to stay longer, you can extend your visa before it expires, and there’s no cap on the number of extensions you can apply for — as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria each time.
After 5 years of continuous residence in the UK on this visa, you may become eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which grants permanent residency and the right to live, work, and study in the UK free from immigration restrictions.
