How graduates from the world's top universities can live and work in the UK without a job offer

The High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa is designed for recent graduates from some of the world's leading universities who want to bring their skills and ambitions to the UK. With no job offer or employer sponsorship required, it's one of the most accessible and flexible routes available to internationally educated graduates looking to explore what the UK has to offer. The visa is valid for up to 2 years, or 3 years for PhD holders, and is part of the UK’s strategy to retain international talent.

Getting Started

To be eligible, you must have been awarded a degree-level qualification within the past five years from a university that appears on the Home Office Global Universities List for the relevant award year. You’ll also need to meet the English language requirement and demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. It’s worth checking the Global Universities List carefully, as eligibility is tied to the specific year your degree was awarded, not just the institution itself.

What You Can Do

The HPI Visa gives you the freedom to work in most jobs, be self-employed, or take time to explore your options — all without needing a sponsor. Study is also permitted, provided the course wouldn’t normally require a Student Visa. Your partner and children under 18 can apply to join you as dependants, provided they meet the relevant eligibility criteria, making it a practical option for those looking to relocate with their family.

Planning Your Next Steps

The HPI Visa cannot be extended and does not lead directly to Indefinite Leave to Remain, so it’s important to think ahead from the moment you arrive. For many, it serves as a valuable window of opportunity to find work, build connections, and transition onto a longer-term route — such as the Skilled Worker Visa or Global Talent Visa — before the visa expires. If settlement in the UK is your ultimate goal, getting the right visa in place during your HPI period will be key.

Do I need a job offer to apply?

No. The HPI Visa is unsponsored and allows you to work or be self-employed without a job offer.

Can I bring family members?

Yes. Eligible partners and children under 18 may apply as dependants.

Does this visa lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)?

No. The HPI Visa does not count towards ILR, but you may switch to a visa route that does.

Which universities are eligible?

Only institutions listed on the Home Office Global Universities List for the year your degree was awarded. This list is updated annually.

Can I switch to another visa route later?

Yes. You may switch to another UK visa category from within the UK if you meet the eligibility criteria.
