Build your life together in the UK with the Spouse and Partner Visa

The Spouse and Partner Visa is designed for those who are either married, in a civil partnership, or in a long-term relationship with a British citizen or a person with settled status. As with most family visas, the application process requires careful preparation, and the strength of your supporting evidence can make a significant difference to the outcome.

Getting Started

To apply, you’ll need to be married, in a civil partnership, or in a long-term relationship with a British citizen or someone settled in the UK. Both of you must be at least 18, your finances must meet the minimum income threshold, and you’ll need to show your relationship is genuine and that you plan to live together permanently. A basic English language qualification (CEFR Level A1) is also required.

Together on Paper

You and your partner will need to provide evidence that your relationship is genuine and intended to be permanent. This typically means submitting documents and papers that demonstrate your shared life together, such as joint financial records, correspondence, photographs taken over time, and evidence of regular communication. The strength of your application will depend on building a clear and consistent picture of your relationship history.

The Path to Residency

Your visa is initially granted for 2.5 years, with the option to extend for another 2.5 years. After 5 years of continuous residence, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
You’re free to work and study without restriction. Children under 18 can also join you as dependants and may later qualify for ILR themselves.

Can I work while on a Spouse or Partner Visa?

Yes. You are allowed to work in any job without restriction.

Can I study on this visa?

Yes. You may study full-time or part-time.

How long can I stay on this visa?

The initial visa is valid for 2.5 years, with the option to extend and later apply for ILR.

Can I bring my children?

Yes. Dependent children under 18 can apply to join you in the UK.

What happens if my relationship ends?

You should seek legal advice, as your visa may be affected. There may be alternative immigration options depending on your circumstances.
