Supporting the UK healthcare sector

The Health and Care Worker Visa allows eligible professionals to work in roles for approved employers within the NHS, NHS suppliers, and adult social care. It offers benefits such as reduced application fees and exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge. It is a key part of the UK immigration system for addressing workforce shortages in the healthcare sector.

Getting Started

To qualify for a Health and Care Worker Visa, you’ll need a confirmed job offer from a Home Office-licensed UK employer, and your role needs to fall within an eligible occupation — this covers qualified doctors, nurses, health professionals, and adult social care workers. You’ll also need to meet the minimum salary threshold for your specific role and occupation code, and demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test or qualification, unless you’re exempt.

Next Steps

Once you have the visa, you can extend it as long as you’re still working for a licensed sponsor and continue to meet the eligibility criteria. After 5 years of continuous residence in the UK on this visa, you may be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which grants you permanent residency and the freedom to live, work, and study in the UK without any time restrictions.

Can I change employers while on this visa?

Yes, but you must apply to update your visa and obtain a new Certificate of Sponsorship from your new employer.

Is the Immigration Health Surcharge applicable?

No. Health and Care Worker Visa holders are exempt from the surcharge.

Can I bring dependants?

Yes. You may bring your partner and children as dependants, provided you meet the financial requirements.

What happens if my job role changes?

You may need to update your visa if your new role falls under a different occupation code or salary threshold.

Can I apply for ILR after 5 years?

Yes, provided you meet the continuous residence and other eligibility requirements.
